A Key Factor in Hazardous Processes: Safety Culture

Safety culture is increasingly recognized as a key contributor to the safe operation of hazardousprocesses. This paper describes the four stages through which manufacturing companies travel intheir journey to a world-class safety culture and applies them to Process Safety Management(PSM).The foundation for this journey is illustrated in a model that describes the four stages of culturestrength: reactive, dependent, independent, and interdependent. The model has been calibratedagainst performance and is based on years of data from both DuPont facilities and externalcompanies. Also described are useful tools that manufacturers employ to improve their safetyculture and performance.
