A study was carried out in the summer of 2009 in order to determine the properties of local materials used in Hanoi, Vietnam for residential construction. The thermal performance of two non-air conditioned houses was studied to find a correlation between new building construction using concrete and brick, and a more traditional construction technique using Laterite brick. The initial study of the surface temperatures of each material showed a greater resistance to solar absorption by the Laterite. A more extensive study was later carried out in each structure in an effort to more accurately determine the thermal behavior of each building material. Both buildings were oriented with the major exterior walls facing south, allowing for a more accurate comparison.
