The Impact of TBT on Chinese Export of Citrus Fruits

China is a major producer of citrus fruit but the export volume of China's citrus fruit is very small and only accounts for 3.7% of gross product. One important reason for this phenomenon is that TBT (Technical Barriers to Trade) which has hindered the citrus fruit's export. Firstly, we introduce the production and trade situation of Chinese citrus fruit and point out the problems existing in citrus fruit industry. China has the biggest annual production of citrus fruit in the world but a small export volume of the same. And main markets of our citrus fruit are in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and EU (European Union). Secondly, this paper compares TBT measures among America, Japan and EU and points out that these TBT measures have adverse influences on China's citrus fruit trade. Finally, certain policies proposals are discussed to cope up with TBT in this paper for example establishment rational quality standards and promotion of non-polluted production. Moreover, these countermeasures also can be used on the export of other fruits.
