This talk addresses the prospects and challenges of introducing nuclear power in the countries of the Middle East, as a reliable and clean source of base-load electricity generation for meeting the rapid growth in electricity demand; freeing up depleting natural gas and oil resources for export and playing a greater role in desalination to help meet the ever increasing needs for potable water. In these countries, electricity demand grows about 6 percent annually, more than 5 times the global average and the potable water on a per capita basis is decreasing at an alarming rate, straining both energy and water supplies. The potential for nuclear power in Egypt and the Middle East region is significant, and has transformative potential for the industry in general. The future market in the region could amount to more than 20 reactor units by 2030 and more than twice that by 2050. A review of operating and current and planned constructions of commercial nuclear power plants and of the various reactor types to be considered for meeting future needs in the region and globally will be presented
