This work deals with the Paschen law in electrical breakdown of gases. From the Towsend model, theoretical values of the Paschen coefficients are deduced, and compared to the measured values from the literature. The theoretical forms of the Paschen coefficients show that the law should include the inter-electrode distance as a separate parameter, i.e. V_b =f(p×d,d). Paschen curve measurements in an argon discharge for inter-electrode distances varying from 2 to 9 cm confirm this result.
