In order to operate a pulse detonation (PD) combustor at a higher frequency than that limited by the response of amagnetic valve, we developed a gas-feeding technique called valveless mode. In a demonstration experiment, we used acircular tube, one end of which was closed and the other end open, as a combustor. Ethylene gas was used as fuel, oxygengas was used as oxidizer, and argon gas was used as inert gas purging residual hot burned gas. The principle of thevalveless-mode gas feeding technique is very simple. When a detonation is initiated in a combustor, the pressure insidethe combustor becomes instantly very high, and gas feeding is stopped. After all of the detonable gas is burned, theburned gas is exhausted through the open end, and the pressure inside the combustor becomes gradually low. When thepressure inside the combustor becomes lower than the gas-feeding pressure, the gas feeding is restarted. By optimizingthe feeding pressures for ethylene, oxygen, and argon gases, the PD combustor was able to be operated by controlling theignition timing only. As a result, the PD combustor was successfully operated at up to 200 Hz.
