The construction of buildings has a very important impact on the environment, and the process of manufacturing and transporting of building materials, and installing and constructing of buildings consumes great energy and emits large quantity of CO2.The present paper defines four sources of CO2 emission in the as-built stage of buildings, which are manufacturing and transporting of building materials, energy consuming of construction equipment, energy consuming for processing resources and disposing construction waste, and The research presented here has been carried out on two case studies in Hong Kong, and the results of CO2 emission in the as-built stage of the two cases shows that 73%-75% of the total CO2 emission is from the embodied CO2 emission of building materials, 18%-19% is from the transportation for building materials, and 6%-8% is due to the energy consuming of construction equipment. Furthermore, by comparing of CO2 emission intensity between the two cases, the result also indicates that the embodied CO2 emission of building materials, especially rebar and concrete, is the main source of CO2 emission in the as-built stage of buildings.
