The US Naval approach for UAS acquisition includes a series of programs conducted by four Program Management (PMAs) offices under PEO (U&W). Among these programs there will be measures of interoperability among the individual UAS, between the UAS and manned aircraft, with Naval UAS and those of the other services and with UAS among allies of the US. The paper will review how the measures of interoperability will be achieved among these groups, the processes that will support the development of interoperability among the programs, and highlight the opportunities for industry to support the implementation of this objective. The coordinated role of Naval RDT&E, use of virtual environments and inter service coordination, such as the US Army Joint Test Center Systems Integration Laboratory (JTC/SIL), as well as the role of international coordination through NATO Joint Capability Group UAV (JCGUAV), will be reviewed. The paper will showcase unique challenges, opportunities and requirements to achieve interoperability in the maritime environment. The paper will detail successes to date and provide a perspective on how interoperability will look as Naval Forces continue with the programs of record through 2020.
