This study chooses Sino-Japanese and Sino-French joint ventures, which both belong to the same automobile group, to explore the effects of human resource management (HRM) polices and practices on worker's well-being, based on 184 samples. The innovation of the study is the comparison of two joint venture companies whose Chinese partner is the same but when the foreign partner comes from two countries with different cultures. In general, results support hypothesized difference in cultural values of the two joint venture firms, but do not support hypothesized difference in HRM practices of the two firms. One of the possible explanations is that although the joint ventures retain some culture values of every investment partner, in the course of integrating and harmonizing, the difference in the firm's HRM practices is more and more irrelevant. In addition, results indicate the HR practices, specifically HR strength, are related to various measures of worker's well-being. Finally, we point out the limitation of this study and future research.
