Starch/Sodium Oleate Modified Ground Calcium Carbonate and its Application in Papermaking

With the increase of filler addition,the paper properties,such as strength,bulk and stiffness,usually decrease obviously during papermaking.To improve filler-fiber bonding in paper and to improve paper strength,the modification of ground calcium carbonate(GCC)with starch/sodium oleate was studied,and the application of modified filler in papermaking was investigated.The optimum conditions for filler modification were obtained as follows: the starch dosage of 50%,sodium oleate dosage of 10%,the starch cooking temperature of 85°C,the starch cooking time of 60min,the time at max.temp.of 5 min.After modification,the strength properties of the fillered handsheets and filler retention were improved significantly.Also,the surface characteristics of unmodified or modified GCC,as well as the bonding characteristics between the filler and fiber,were investigated using optical microscope and SEM.
