Surface modification of precipitated calcium carbonate with self-made cationic styrene/acrylic emulsion was prepared and the experimental conditions of optimized modification parameters were defined by embedded ratio. The surface structure of modified precipitated calcium carbonate was characterized by FTIR. The result indicates that the maximum embedded ratio was 99% under the optimized modified conditions, which were as follows: temperature was 70 , pH was 9, the quality °C proportion between precipitated calcium carbonate and cationic styrene/acrylic ester copolymer was 75: 1. According to the spectra of FTIR, it was inferred that chemical binding and physical adsorption between surface modifiers and precipitated calcium carbonate had happened during the modification reaction. Using modified precipitated calcium carbonate as paper fillers, images of paper were observed by SEM (scanning electron microscope) and paper properties were tested. It was confirmed by SEM that distribution of modified precipitated calcium carbonate in paper was uniform and it was difficult to flocculate. Compared with unmodified precipitated calcium carbonate, the result indicates that PPF (paper perfect formation) value of papermaking added 35% modified precipitated calcium carbonate was low and the PPF value reduced after point of C6. Physical properties were improvements such as Z-direction force, bursting strength, tearing strength and tensile index increase10.51%, 74.3%, 38.7% and 64.6% respectively. Optical properties and ashing content of paper were also increased.
