Chemical modification consisting of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpipelidine-1-oxylradicai(TEMPO)-NaClO-NaBr system was used to modify the pulp fibers in this paper.The modified fibers were characterized by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM)analysis.The influence of pH,temperature and NaClO concentration on fibers morphology was investigated.The results showed that the optimal effect of TEMPO-mediated oxidation could be obtained by using a sufficient proportion of NaClO and suitably long time,so that the pulp fiber cellulose were selectively oxidized to aldehyde and carboxyl groups.The morphology of the fibers changed greatly after oxidation.It was demonstrated that the increase of aldehyde and carboxyl groups for cellulose would enhance the strength of interlacement between pulp fibers and so paper strength properties.
