The increased presence of carbon dioxide with hydrogen in air at moderately elevated mixture temperature reduces the value of the rich flammability limit in air. These experimentally determined values decreased gradually with the residence time of the mixture in the test apparatus before ignition. This effect has been attributed to the increased surface reaction activity of the hydrogen containing mixture at increasingly elevated test temperatures. A waiting time of not more than two minutes is suggested to be suitable for the determination of the limits.
