The main products of (NH_4)_2SO_4 decomposition (with or without ZnO present) were NH_3, H_2O, and SO_3, only. The GC/MS-MS measurements confirm that only NH_3 and H_2O are present in the products at reaction temperatures lower than 400°C. The decomposition mechanism for (NH_4)_2SO_4 in the presence of ZnO appears to differ from that of pure (NH_4)_2SO_4. When zinc oxide is present SO_3 forms from (NH_4)_2SO_4 decomposition at high temperatures (500-800°C), while SO_2 is the main reaction product at temperatures below about 450°C when pure (NH_4)_2SO_4 is reacted.
