Correlation of Lighting Quality Descriptors with Semantic Characterization of Luminous Scenes

This study concerns the analysis of the results of an experimental protocole dealing with the presentation of a set of calibrated luminous scenes to a panel of 30 observers. The objective was to identify the possible association of objective luminous characteristics of the scenes (luminance distribution, uniformity, etc.) with the perceived luminous quality of the observers, expressed through a specific vocabulary.Various scenes of indoor environments were presented through a stereographic and interactive large screen display equipment. They concerned rooms in office-buildings, museums, hospitals, restaurants, school buildings and shops. The observers were invited to rate the quality of the indoor spaces using a semantic scale. For each scene, 40 "Lighting Quality Descriptors" were computed. They were objective functions based on the processing of luminance distribution in the field of vision, or in some fraction of it.We found that some of the proposed "objective" descriptors were relevant with terms and values expressed by the observers using the semantic scale.
