The research on health monitoring and safety evaluation of long span bridges are very actively in recent years. The health monitoring and assessment system of bridges based on sensing technology with fiber gratings has extensive application foreground. The author presents a framework of a real-time inspection and monitoring system based on fiber-optic sensing technique. The system designed was applied to a long-span suspension bridge. The widely used genetic algorithm is employed to seek optimal measuring point of sensors in the bridge's deck and suspenders. A safety-estimation expert system was also presented in this paper. And the fuzzy neural network Algorithm is implemented to process the large numbers of data signals collected by sensors. The research and practice works we have performed showed that the health monitoring and safety-estimation system has comprehensive monitoring contents and reliable evaluation means. Together with further research production, the built system provide the maintenance supervisor with valuable information of bridge's damage diagnosis and prediction, and bring grate effect in the security of bridge structural safety and reliability.
