The high operating pressures and temperatures imposed on screw compressors lead to significant changes in dimensions and locations of the parts considering the small clearances required to maintain a high level of efficiency and the running quality needed for noise and reliability. In this paper we review an analytical process for estimating thermal effects on screw rotor geometry and the resulting impact on operating characteristics of the rotors. A brief summary of earlier work on clearances is followed by a new application of the analysis, the computation of mesh transmission error and analysis of the influence of thermal effects on design choices for the rotor pair.
