As its name implies, next-to-skin (NTS) apparel is apparel which is intended to be worn as a first layer of clothing, usually in an assemblage of clothing layers such as: undershirt (or NTS), insulative layer such as fleece, and outer layer such as a windproof jacket. In a warm or hot environment where the wearer will be active, NTS apparel may be the only layer of clothing worn. In this case, the main purpose of the NTS is to manage moisture at the skin surface. The majority of next-to-skin (NTS) apparel is mass produced.
