In this paper, a sequential turbocharging system for improving the part-load performance and operating economy of a marine diesel engine is described. The sequential turbocharging system is applied to a marine V type high-speed diesel engine. The propeller characteristics experimentation and the load characteristics experimentation are done one by one on the diesel with one turbocharger and with two turbochargers. The experimentation from one turbocharger to two turbochargers is done. The experimental results show that the diesel engine performance at part-load condition is markedly improved by using this turbocharging system and in the range of 600r/min to 1400r/min of engine-speed, the running area of the diesel is enlarged 71%, and on an average, the fuel consumption was decreased 6.7 g/kW.h, the boost pressure was increased 30%, the turbine inlet temperature was decreased 22%, the exhaust smoke was decreased 57%.
