Heat transfer studies at the Harry Diamond Laboratories aresummarized and applied to a 100 A thermal battery that will be used forvehicular propulsion. The gas atmosphere in the thermal insulation is amajor factor affecting the heat transfer. The remotely piloted vehicle(RPV) thermal battery was designed to serve as a silent energy sourcefor a propeller-driven missile that will deliver a warhead payload. Thehigh-current capacity Li(Al)/LiCl-LiBr-LiF eutectic-MgO/FeS2electrochemical system was chosen for the RPV battery because of thehigh power requirements. RPV battery test results are given. Thefeasibility of a 100 A thermal battery for vehicular propulsion has beendemonstrated
