Modeling of structures with curved boundaries: applied to the determination of band structures in photonic crystals

We show how waveguide structures with curved boundaries can be modeled by lines of varying length. The formulas are applied to the determination of band structures in photonic crystals, showing an improvement of accuracy, compared to the staircase approximation.
