A model adhesive system containing bisphenol A-epichlorohydrin based epoxy resin and an amidoamine-curing compound was investigated. AEROSIL~R 200 fumed silica was treated with 3.0% and 12.0% w/w DYANSYLAN~R GLYMO silane and compared to untreated fumed silica and equal portions of silane added in situ. Water resistance was evaluated by testing lap shear assemblies conditioned in 63°C water at seven-day intervals up to 28 days. Adhesion was expressed as a percentage of unexposed untreated fumed silica. AEROSIL~R 200 fumed silica treated with 12% w/w glycidyloxyproplytrimethoxysilane showed the best results with adhesion at 118.2% of the unexposed specimen.
