In this study the butane adsorption and desorption properties of coal-based activated carbons in Chinahas been characterized. Coal-based activated carbons were mainly made from Taixi anthracite and Datongbituminous coal in China. The raw coal properties influence the butane adsorption and desorption properties ofcoal-based activated carbon. The butane adsorption on coal-based activated carbon prepared from Taixi anthraciteis higher than that of coal-based activated carbon prepared from Datong bituminous coal. The butane desorptionyield from coal-based activated carbon prepared from Taixi anthracite is lower than that of coal-based activatedcarbon prepared from Datong bituminous coal. This is because mesopore volume of activated carbon preparedfrom Datong bituminous coal is higher than that of activated carbon prepared from Taixi anthracite. Catalyzingactivation can enhance mesopore volume and butane desorption of activated carbon prepared from Taixi anthracitecoal.
