Silos which are circular in planform are usually formed using a conical or dome roof, a cylindrical wall and, if elevated, a conical hopper. It is common practice to put a ringbeam at the junctions between these segments. Under conditions of axisymmetric loading and support, the ringbeam is required to carry circumferential compression forces to maintain the equilibrium of the junction. When the structure is supported on columns, the ringbeams play an important role in redistributing the discrete loads of the column supports into a more uniform stress state. Two full-scale silos were instrumented to assess the level of stress concentrations at the transition between cylindrical and conical sections. Results of this testing are presented. The SAISC silo guideline addresses many of the problems associated with silo design including column-supported bunkers and silos. It consists of a loading section, for both steel and concrete silos and a design section for steel bunkers and silos.
