Artificial Intelligence in Rehabilitation Medicine: An Emerging Technology

Using a combination of telecommunication networks, personal computer systems to support sensory feedback substitution, and artificial intelligence (AI), it is possible to deliver cost-effective therapeutic interventions to individuals with neurological disorders of movement (e.g., stroke) in remote settings. Such systems will permit a single therapist to concurrently supervise the rehabilitative protocols of a number of patients. To successfully enhance the delivery of such telerehabilitation, AI has the potential to diagnose deficits, suggest reeducational protocols to the health professional, and guide the individual's rehabilitative recovery.
