In addition to the technical benefits of integral planar resistors, it is the opportunity for substrate area and cost reduction, plus the cost advantages arising from the elimination of SMT chip resistors, that will drive the use of planar resistor technology. For a given design, the maximum component density, average I/O density and required interconnectivity (inches/square inch of wiring) are the primary determinates of the use of planar resistors for cost optimization. As high densities force the designer to more advanced circuit board technologies, integral planar resistors become the lower cost alternative to high-density substrates and SMT chip resistors.
