Fallow legumes in the australian sugar industry: review of recent research findings and implications for the sugarcane cropping system

The results of research carried out by the sugar Yield Decline Joint Venture into fallow legumes over the past six years are summarised. The research incorporated work on legume species, crop management, nitrogen contribution and subsequent mineralisation, the effect on cane and sugar yields, and the potential for grain production. The results show that well-managed legume crops can be beneficial to the sugarcane production system in providing sources of fixed nitrogen, improving soil health and producing increased cane and sugar yields. However, to capitalise on the potential benefits, it is necessary to select the best species and provide a high level of crop management.
