In this paper, we describe the checkerboard algorithm for texture based rendering of semi-transparent volumetric data. The checkerboard algorithm extracts only the opaque voxels for a given volume, before any rendering is done. The entire set of voxels, however, is also still available for other invasive operations. We present our results of implementing this algorithm within GeoViz, which is a geophysical visualization tool. We are able to improve the rendering time of semi-transparent volumes within GeoViz on average of 86% faster as compared to the original rendering, time with its most common opacity setting.
