This paper describes an on-going project that involves the construction and evaluation of an Internet-based Knowledge Integration System (IKIS) developed to support a Computer-assisted Instruction (CAI) graduate course. The IKIS integrates cognitive theories of learning and instruction, computer networking technologies, and face-to-face classroom teaching in order to (a) help students build coherent knowledge representations of a great variety of knowledge and skills that are required to design and produce instructional software prototypes and, (b) create a community of practice to aid students in making the decisions concerning the design and production. Our discussion will be focused on two important system features of the IKIS (i.e., the information architecture and communication facilities) that enable us to achieve such goals. A plan for evaluating the IKIS will also be briefly described
