This paper is concerned with the four main integrated components of online learning: an administration management system; an authoring system; a learning resource catalogue; and a delivery system. The four components are set against the evolution of the concept of 'learning objects' which strongly influence how learning resources are authored and upon which a learning resource catalogue is based. Learning objects are generally small discrete chunks of learning materials that are reusable and can articulate with other learning objects to make a learning environment. Learning objects can be described in standard terms (i.e., metadata) through the use of a web application and those data can be submitted to an online searchable database to enable their use in other contexts and combinations.
