A simplified equation for estimating the added mass distribution over large floating structures is presented to evaluate the hydroelastic behaviro of large floating structures by a BE-FE hybrid model efficiently. The overall added mass is evaluated by multiplying the closed form solution for the heave motion of the equivalent rigid circular disk withinfinite water depth by three independent factors: water depth factor, planar shape factor and hydroelastic factor. The water depth factor that depends on the water depth is evaluated by the closed form solution of the equivalent rigid circular disk with finite depth. The planar shape factor that depends on the peripheral length of structure and the hydroelastic factor that depends on the thickness of structure are calculated by the BE-FE hybrid model of the target structure separately. Numerical examples are presented to show the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed equation by comparing with numerical results obtained by a BE-FE direct method for large floating structures with different planar shapes and thicknesses.
