Injection is widely used and is believed to be the only effective method of drug delivery owing to difficulties experienced in absorption by other routes of administration. Attention has recently been focused on the intranasal administration of peptides and intranasal liquid formulations have been developed. However, the absorption rates acheived with such formulations are said to be poor. We have been investigating an intranasal delivery system for the administration of peptides using dry powder carriers, and have found that several peptides can be absorbed at high levels without local irritation. For example, insulin, growth hormone and parathyroid hormone formulations, have shown absorption values of 10 approx 30
