Cyclodextrins (CDs) are cyclic oligosaccharides comprised of alpha-1,4-linked glucose monomers. Commercially avaialbe CDs contain 6,7, or 8 glucose monomers, and they are commonly referred to as alpha-CD, beta-CD, and gamma-CD, respectively. Of these, beta-CD is the most widely available and is the lowest cost Cd. Cyclodextrins are now established agents in drug formulations and delivery.~1-2 Currently, there are 34 drug formualtions containing cyclodextrins that are approved or in various stages in the approval process. The utility of CDs in pharmaceuticals arises from their unique cyclic structure which, topoligically, may be viewed as a torus in which the exterior is relatively hydrophilic and the interior is relatively lipophilic.~1 Because of this unique structur,e the CD can act as a host and form inclusion complexes with a variety of guest molecules.
