Macromolecular biopharmaceuticals, such as peptides, proteins, oligonucleotides and gene vectors, require new technologies for their safe and efficient delivery across epithelial absorption barriers. While colloidal carrier systems, such as liposomes or nanoparticles, can efficiently protect such compounds against premature degradation and control the time and rate of drug release, the transport of such rather large molecules or supramolecular structures still needs to be enhanced.
