Alloys with starting stoichiometry SmCo_7-xMn_x(x=0.7, 1.4) were prepared by arc melting and then cast into ribbons using the melt-spinning technique with a velocity of 60 m/s. The ribbon samples were crystallised into the TbCu_7-type structure. The lattice parameters, determined using the space group P6/mmm, for a sample with x=1.4 annealed at 913 K were: a--4.879(1), c=4.09(1)A. The annealed ribbons have a grain size<10 mum with a composition Sm_1.03Co_5.6Mn_1.37. The ribbons produced from SmCo_5.6Mn_1.4 have a high coercivity of 3.13 kOe and saturation magnetisation of 57.0 Am~2/kg.
