This paper describes some of the major changes in the content of the software being entered into vehicles today. The two main application areas discussed are Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS, or often called Driver Information Systems, DIS or Telematics), and Embedded Electronic Control Units (eg Body, Engine, Safety & Chassis). For these two different application areas, the differing Real Time Operating System (RTOS) functionalities are explained. Included in further detail, for the ITS application, is one of the first integrated RTOS, and Java architectures, including Graphics Stacks, Networking, Web Browsers and Servers. The combination of a tightly integrated implementation of Personal Java (Sun's optimized Java technology for the embedded industry), and a RTOS provides for the combined features such as Internet-readiness, security, extensibility, and upgradeability, with the reliability, scalability, portability, and performance of the development environment.
