Strengthening International Exchange and Cooperation, and Speeding up Building Shanghai into an International Shipping Center

Mr. Chairman, ladies and gentlemen, I am very honoured to attend this conference and to share with you the outlook for the development of the international maritime industry of the 21st Century. First of all, please allow to me to extend my warmest welcome to all the participants and guests present here on behalf of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and in my personal capacity. My presentation will comprise of three parts: 1. Shanghai Present and Future Development Shanghai has always been the largest economic centre of China and it leads the field among major cities in China in such aspects as the city scale, economic might, the foundation for economic development, technological innovation capacity and the opening-up. It comes out on top of the 50 cities in China with greatest comprehensive strengths. In the 90s, boosted by the Pudong development, and especially from 1992 onwards, Shanghai has made significant achievements in its economic and social development and urban construction.
