Coal pyrolysis, as the initial stage of coal combustion and gasification, significantly affects the physical and chemical properties of the char formed. The development of pore structure depends on pyrolysis conditions, coal rank and pre-treatment. A coal can be characterized as plastic or non-plastic depending on whether it exhibits thermoplastic behavior. The thermoplasticity of coal affects the pyrolysis process, subsequently the pore structure development This study presents the results of coal pyrolysis and pore structure characterization of two coals with different thermoplastic properties.
