Design engineers often face technical challenges when existing pumping station and piping systems rquuire modifications to meet increased water demands and changing system operating conditions. These challenges are to make sure that the newly modified piping system does not violate the design requirements of the existing system; to carefully design and integrate the new additions. The cooling water makeup system for the Ocean State Power (OSP) plant is one example. Due to the need for more reliable cooling twoer makeup water source and increased water demand, this poant added an in-line pond and the associated pump station to the original makeup water system. This paper describes hydraulic design and hydraulic transient analyses that were performed in 1996 to support the system modification effort.
