Laboratory studies of two different pier scour countermenasrues are reported. Sacificial piles, which previous studies had shown to induce significant scour depth reductions under clear-water conditions, were found to be rather less effective under live-bed conditions due to the passage of bd forms. Sacrificial pile are not recommended unless the flow remains aligned and the flow intensity is relatively small. Econuraging results were found for the use of Iowa vanes installed upstream of the pier. Further testing is recommended.
