Attitudes, risk behavour and risk managament

The core aim of this paper is to present results on the associations between safety attitudes, perceived risk and risk behaviour. A self-completion questionnaire survey was carried out among employees at 13 plants within Norsk Hydro. The plants belonged to several divisions within the company. A total of 730 respondents replied to the questionnaire. Employee attitudes towards safety and perceived risk contributed significantly to self-report risk behaviour. We were able to explain about 50 percent of the variance in risk behaviour. Acceptability of rule violations was the most important predictor, probably because acceptability also affected how often the respondnets took chances and broke safety rules. The paper also discusses the cause-effect relation between risk perception and behaviour.
