Oligopeptide transporters, PepT1 and PepT2 take up native di- and tripeptide as well as peptide-mimetic drugs such as #beta#-lactam antibiotics, ACE inhibitors and bestatin. Expression of PepT1 is limited in small intestine and kideney and that of PepT2 is in kidney and brain. Such a limited tissue distribution and broad substrate specificity of oligopeptide transporters may be advantageous to improve intestinal absorption and to deliver peptide-mimetic drugs to the specific tissues which are needed to be supplied with nutrients for continuous growth.
