The Pantex plant in Amarillo, Texas has been designed as a possible site for the long term storage of nuclear weapons components and materials. The Amarillo National Resource Center for Plutonium (ANRCP) has been formed to address issues related to the Pantex plant that are pertinent to the State of Texas. The Texas Universities Robotics and Automation Consortium (TURAC), sponsored by the ANRCP, provides expertise to the State of Texas and the Department of Energy (DOE) in the area of robotics and automtion relative to nuclear material handling, disposition, and storage. TURAC is a multi-disciplinary engineering consortium of researchers (15 professors and over 20 graduate students) making contributions in a broad spectrum covering many areas in robotics, telerobotics, and automation. In this paper, an overview of the project as defined by the first two years of ANRCP funding will be provided, which includes research in areas as diverse as interface design to dynamic modeling and control.
