Abstract: We present a simple model for the variations in the wafer- normal spontaneous emission coherence length and spontaneous emission power as a function of cavity length for an external-cavity surface-emitting laser. External-cavity operation allows changing of the cavity length without affecting material properties and observation of the transition to the macrocavity domain by extending the cavity length beyond the spontaneous emission coherence length. The model smoothly describes this transition in terms of impact of an ideal Fabry-Perot cavity on the emission from a Gaussian source. !19
