Origin and evolution of NDE reference standards

Abstract: Standards are available for all NDT methods, but not many can be used for aircraft maintenance inspection, whether it is for aging aircraft or not. An ultrasonic standard for aluminum to calibrate the instrument for contact inspection is overdue. There is lack of requirements for visual inspection, except for the yearly eye examination. The inspectors should have a better understanding of the nature and origin of fatigue failures, corrosion and where, why and how it can occur. !16
