Development of Inductively Coupled Plasma Technology For Waste Destruction

Hazardous wastes are defined as those wastes that may cause adverse or chronic effects on human health or the environment. Effective management of the hazardous wastes is an issue which has attracted increasing attention. Incineration is the most common method for treating hazardous wastes. The major drawback of conventional incineration methods is secondary emissions of air toxins because of incomplete destruction of refractory waste materials such as PCBs. Thus, for instance, extremely toxic PCDD (Polychlorinated dibenzo-dioxin) and PCDF (Polychlorinated dibenzofuran) are formed and emitted as by products, the emission of NO_X,fineparticles of fly ash need further treatment also. An innovative incineration technology emerging only very recently is the application of ultra high temperature plasmas. Results from several pilot scale demonstration systems showed that the technology indeed holds great potential for hazardous wastes destruction.
