NPAHs (Nitrated Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons) are wide spread environmental pollutants originated primarily from fossil fuel combustion.The determination of their concentrations in air is of great interest because several NPAHs, e.g., nitro and dinitropyrenes, exhibit strong, direct-acting mutagenic activity in Ames bacterial assay. The NPAHs are low volatility compounds exist mostly as adsorbed organics in airborne particulate matter.ln typical urban environment, the concentrations of NPAHs are in the range of ngs/M~3 air, which is considerably lower than those of the much more studied PAHs (tens to hundreds ngs/M~3).However, despite of their presence in lower concentrations, recent reports have shown that the NPAHs.as a group,actually account for higher % of the total mutagenic activity of urban air particulate matter than the PAHs themselves.
