In this paper a Global Positioning System (GPS) aided passive imaging navigation system is presented. It is shown that integration of a GPS receiver with an imaging sensor yields a system that supplies complete position, velocity, angular rate and attitude information. With the GPS information available, not only the problem of the depth/speed scaling ambiguity is avoided, but also simpler and hence more robust equations can be formulated so as to give the angular velocity solution. The performance of the GPS aided angular velocity estimation process and the impact of GPS measurement noise on the estimation accuracy is investigated by theoretical analysis and computer simulation examples. It is shown that even under heavy impact of GPS measurement noise, the motion parameters can still be accurately determined.
