This paper presents the application of SMART Layer? Technology for in-situassessment of the health of ceramic/composite panels used in protective systems. Thework builds on previous studies to integrate sensors into the plate manufacturingprocess, and addresses issues such as ingress/egress of wiring and sensor survivability.An embeddable structural health monitoring system that could be seamlesslyintegrated into a semi-automated manufacturing process for protective systems wasdeveloped. Multiple sensor types and monitoring modes were integrated, includingpassive impact monitoring, electro-mechanical impedance measurements for sensorself-diagnostics, active ultrasonic scans for damage detection, and static strainmeasurements. Both low velocity and high velocity ballistic impact tests wereconducted, and results are presented and discussed.
