Based on the electronic assembly industry standard, two pad sizes of 1210 and 0805 surface mount capacitor are designed, and the strength of soldering structure is compared by using the shear strength test. The test results show that the strength of the soldering structure with the pad size according to the standard of IPC7351B is better under the shear strength test conditions used in this paper. Under the same shear strength test condition, the fracture mode of all 1210 capacitor samples is component damage; while the fracture mode of 0805 capacitor samples showed component damage, component termination/solder fracture and component termination/solder fracture coexist.
